Are You An Expert In Your Field Part 2

Steven Carr — 2016-06-16

How do you become an expert in your field? Is it an amount of time that you’ve worked, the education, the experience? How do you get to become the expert level plumber, expert level doctor, expert level whatever? I have heard numbers like 10,000 hours or 7 years and I have completed both of those limits, but sometimes I feel less like an expert. In part 2 of our four part series on showing your expert level, we continue this week looking at using a blog on your website to communicate your expert level knowledge and commitment.

Using Your Website As An Expert

First off, your website content. Adding a blog to your website can make you look like an expert. Maybe you are, maybe you don’t think you are, but if you’re trying to sell me your financial services or you’re trying to sell me you as a plumber or you’re trying to tell me you as a car dealer I want to know that you are an expert in your field. I want to know that you are the best of the best so when I call on you I’m going to get the best service, the best treatment, and the best information so I need you to establish that you are an expert in your field. A blog on your website is a great way to do that because you get to consistently post information that is relevant to what you do from an authoritative standpoint. When you post on your website it’s going to be picked up and read by people like me who are looking for what you’re doing. Easy, right?

What To Post

So what kind of things do you post on your blog? Well we can break it into three categories, really. First, post things that are going to educate consumers. Second, communicate things that are different or new in your industry. Third, you want to talk about your experiences with customers. Tell those stories about how you as a plumber have gone out and helped somebody and done something great. Use that platform of your website to communicate that you’re an expert in your field, that you stay standing up on what’s new in your field that you apply that expertise with great customer service. That type of information goes well on your website and that’s a great way to use a blog to promote yourself and your website.

You want to show and teach people that you really do know your stuff. You may not have 10,000 hours under your belt and maybe don’t have seven years. I think you can still achieve that expert level by showing people that you truly are knowledgeable and ready to help them at an expert level.
