When to evaluate your website: Technologies Change
Websites are not like wine. They don’t get better with age. In fact, having an outdated website can be very harmful to your business. We recommend an annual review of your website just to make sure you are on track. That does not mean you need a complete overhaul every year, but just that you are keeping up with the needs of your web presence. In this series we will look at the four big areas that cause your website to stagnate: trends, technologies, targets, and tasks.
This week we are looking at the way technology changes and how that impacts your website.
They say dogs have 7 years to each human year. I think technology has 77 years to each human year. We now see many industries where the majority of their web traffic is coming from mobile phones, not computers. If you have a website that was built before the rise of mobile responsive design you are missing the mark for your visitors. Even if the majority is not using a mobile device to browse your website, be assured that a lot of people still use your website from those smaller devices. You need to be delivering a version of the site that is friendly to them.
With the rise of mobile devices we have also seen a lowering of attention spans and more inclusion of video. People are less likely to read text and more likely to watch a video than ever before. While we still need the text for a number of other functions, including video and other moving elements is important.
A big change that we have to keep up with right now is the push for SSL everywhere. Google is at the forefront of encouraging all website owners to run their sites with encrypted connections at all times. The back story on this is long, but suffice it to say that running a site without SSL is going to hurt you sooner or later. Until the last few months the need for SSL was slim and as it added cost to a project it is avoided by most people. That is going to have to change.
The moral of the story is, technology is changing fast. You need to keep up with those changes to remain relevant.
